The University of Wyoming plans to launch the UW Bitcoin Research Institute in August, aimed at providing "expert research in the same field" on Bitcoin. Bradley Rettler, a Bitcoin activist and associate professor at the University of Wyoming, announced the establishment of this new institution on the X platform on July 28th and will serve as the director of the institute.
Bradley Rettler expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of research on Bitcoin, stating that its "quality is poor," and emphasized that the industry needs more experts in the same field to ensure that the public can correctly understand the essence and operation of Bitcoin.
He specifically mentioned a study led by Camilo Mora, a professor at the University of Hawaii, in 2018, which claimed that the output of Bitcoin alone could cause a global temperature rise of 2 degrees Celsius before 2048. Bradley Rettler criticized the study for not considering difficulty adjustment and insufficient understanding of the upper limit of memory block size. Bradley Rettler emphasized in his X tweet on July 28th:
These errors have been brought into news and policy. Bitcoin is multifaceted in theory, and even more so in practice. Journalists cannot be experts, so they rely on scholars. But many scholars have disappointed them
The Bitcoin Research Institute at the University of Wyoming will officially open at the beginning of the fall semester of the 2024-2025 academic year and will host annual summer workshops, academic awards, and weekly seminars. The research institute will be designated as a non-profit organization and will accept Bitcoin donations to fund research. Bradley Rettler explained:
We will allocate 4% of our funds to Bitcoin, so if you donate Bitcoin, we will not sell it
